Linux Kernel Development
Linux Kernel Developers are the people responsible for building and maintaining the core of Linux. They perform activities such as configuring development systems, using git, writing kernel patches, testing patches, writing commit logs, sending patches, and working with the rest of the Linux kernel community.
Cloud & Containers
At their core, those working in this field deal with data and applications hosted in the cloud, meaning in connected databases located off premise. Positions include Cloud Administrators who transition necessary infrastructure to the cloud and configure and maintain cloud instances, and Cloud Engineers who handle more complex cloud activities such as designing and building cloud infrastructure and applications.
Networking
Networking is the process of connecting multiple computers and enabling them to communicate with one another. With the rise in cloud, edge, mobile and IoT computing, networking affects our day to day lives more than ever before. Network Engineers are responsible for designing, building, optimizing and maintaining network infrastructure and systems.
DevOps & Site Reliability
With the rise of Agile software development models, DevOps has grown in prominence in recent years. A combination of “development” and “operations”, DevOps removes the silos between these two traditionally separate disciplines. DevOps & Site Reliability Engineers are responsible for building, using and maintaining systems and applications.
Blockchain
Blockchain is a young but rapidly growing area of technology, which uses distributed ledgers that are decentralized and distributed with no single administrator. The technology enables more accurate and verifiable record of transactions which can be trusted more than a traditional database due to its decentralized nature. Blockchain Administrators and Engineers build, maintain and contribute to these distributed ledgers. While cryptocurrency is the best known implementation for blockchain technology, it is used for many other purposes including supply chain management and tracing of financial transactions.
Systems Engineering & Architecture
Systems Engineers and Architects are responsible for the design and implementation of an organization’s entire information technology infrastructure. They oversee design, development, deployment, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance and related activities. This role typically touches on both software and hardware systems.
Application Development
Application Developers build applications for use in a wide variety of technologies. This could include web applications, mobile applications, cloud applications, desktop applications and more. This role is less concerned with the architecture and maintenance of an operating system, and instead focused on building new applications for that operating system.
Embedded Development
Embedded Developers live in the space where software meets hardware. They build the software that users almost never see, but without which hardware and computers as we know them would not function. This includes software that devices – from small sensors to medical devices, mobile phones, industrial equipment and more – rely on.
